From classrooms … to professional kitchens!

On Friday, June 21st, 2019, at the Center for Social Integration and Employability of Caritas Hellas in Kipseli, a graduation event for the participants in the vocational training in the cooking sector. This seminar was completed through 10 intensive 5-week classes, in collaboration with AstroLab/Odyssea and The Culinary Center & Cookery Club (Mathimata Magirikis).

Both the participants and the organizers were deeply emotional on that day. Through this small but comprehensive period of time, apprentice cooks demonstrated all their great eager for knowledge, their love for cooking, their desire to find work on the subject that interests them so much. They were taught what collective work, co-operation, consistency, commitment, patience and perseverance would mean in a splendidly harmonious multicultural environment. They shared the experiences and difficulties of their everyday life, but they also found support for each other, a common goal of sharing and dreaming about their future.

As Caritas Hellas, we couldn’t be more proud of these people, who, with stubbornness and great effort, already a few days after their graduation, already start getting their first jobs in the field of cooking! We wish them all the best for their lives from now on!

Last but not least, we want to thank our partners, along with whom we worked together to make this initiative come true, and of course the chefs who followed the participants along their way throughout this course, supporting them with their precious dedication and knowledge as great teachers.

The vocational seminar is part of the Program “Social and Economic Integration of Refugees and Immigrants in Athens” concerning the support and integration of refugees and immigrants in Greek society. The Program is implemented by Caritas Hellas and is funded by Caritas Switzerland.
