On Thursday 21/03/2019, 25 students with their 2 teachers from “Frederiksberg Gymnasium” of Copenhagen, have visited the Social Spot and the Social House of Caritas Hellas in Neos Kosmos. To begin with, a presentation was the services that are provided and the activities that take place to the Social Spot.
Afterwards, the group of “Discover Athens”, which is carried out the past six months, conducted their fourth organized tour guide. Four young refugees, in collaboration with the rest of the group, took up the role of a tour guide, and gave a guided tour.
To begin with, the “tour guides” welcomed the visitors to Greece and informed them about the historical wealth of this country and that during the walk they are going to walk to one the oldest areas of Athens with historical and archaeological wealth. As they discovered the area, the refugees narrated the history of Akropolis and the area of Plaka which is under the shadow of Parthenon and they stopped to the historical Monument of Lycicrates. Furthermore, they went up to Anafiwtika Area, a scenic neighborhood, which lies under Acropolis and ended up to the square of the Winds. There, in front of the Tower of the Winds they discussed about Greek Mythology and particularly about the myth of giving the name of Athens to the city. The tour guides showed pictures of Cecrops the first founder of Athens, goddness Athena and god Poseidon and the eight winds.
In addition, the refugee-tour guides informed the group about the Greek tastes and entertainment as they heard Greek bouzouki and Greek music that is heard in the streets of the historic center of Athens. The visitors said that they enjoyed the tour and they are leaving with the best impression form such a warm welcome.
At the end, the students visited the Neos Kosmos Social House of Caritas Hellas and they had an induction moment in the project’s community activities drinking tea and discussing with the beneficiaries of the House. Then, the students along with the children who are attending the afterschool project activities organized an Easter Egg decorating Workshop. That visit concluded with a fun activity that facilitated to “get to know you” questions, gathering altogether in a circle. That common activity was a great experience for all of us, encouraging positive interaction!
We are looking forward to further joint initiatives!
