On Wednesday 21st of August, members of the Caritas Hellas Center for Social Integration and Employability in Kypseli visited for the third time the women of the Holy Cross (“Timios Stavros”) nursery home in Agia Paraskevi in order to fill their daily activities with joy.
After the initial welcoming and getting to know them, we invited them to participate in the “smell and memory” game which included the recognition of a number of herbs and spices, such as rosemary, oregano, cinnamon, thyme, lavender, mint and basil. With the help of smell, touch and sight, the elderly women were trying to identify their familiar herbs and to tell us about their various uses they already knew and had performed in the past – such as at the preparation of food, herbal drinks, etc. Each one of the women enjoyed the massage of her hands with aromatic creams while we sang songs of their time, which were recognized by the elderly and actively participated in singing them!
It was another touching encounter with these women, and we plan to have it again soon!
The visit is part of the Program “Social and Economic Integration of Refugees and Immigrants in Athens” concerning the support and integration of refugees and immigrants in Greek society. The Program is implemented by Caritas Hellas and is funded by Caritas Switzerland.
