In the first days of October 2019, the Center for Social Integration and Employability that Caritas Hellas operates in Kipseli closed one year of presence in the Kipseli Municipal Market. On Tuesday, the 8th of October, the employees of the Social Center have chosen to celebrate it with an artistic activity, on the proposal of the excellent artist Christina Grec, a member of the group of artists called “Athens Street Art Festival” which has been enriching the walls in various Athens neighborhoods with beautiful and meaningful paintings since 2010 (details of their activities can be found at the link: https://athensaf.eu/).

The idea was beautiful, simple, and very participatory: everyone would draw and paint a single small feather, which would eventually be joined into two large wings, which in turn would be placed on a wall in the common area of the Municipal Market. There, each participant would have the opportunity to see himself or herself “wearing” those wings.

The participation was very encouraging: members of the psychosocial empowerment group, students from the Greek and English classes, as well as residents of the neighborhood, passing by, who were fascinated by our beautiful work and joined the creativity team, worked together and with big smiles, enjoying themselves, to get this wonderful result.

The artist shared with us her beautiful thoughts that led her to this activity: “I feel that such an idea largely represents what Caritas Hellas is trying to do through its everyday work. These people, fleeing their homeland, are going through excruciating paths in their quest to reach the “impossible” dream called Europe. Somewhere along this path, their wings got “wrinkled”, “crushed”. Caritas Hellas manages, even by small but steady steps, to give them hope again, to put these wings back on their shoulders, to make them move forward and dream again …”.

We thank her very much and hope to continue with her on even more beautiful activities. We also become more beautiful people, and the reward we receive from such joyful moments that we share with all these people is invaluable.

The visit is part of the Program “Social and Economic Integration of Refugees and Immigrants in Athens” concerning the support and integration of refugees and immigrants in Greek society. The Program is implemented by Caritas Hellas and is funded by Caritas Switzerland.
